Hanohano ʻo Laʻiʻōpua
I ka malu o Hualālai
Kuahiwi kilakila
Ahuwale i nā Kona
He aloha ka ʻikena
O ke kai ʻānapanapa
Pili ana me ka pali
ʻEhuʻehu aʻo Noio
Uhi wale ke aloha
Kamahaʻo o nā pua
Lamalama i ke ana
ʻŌnohi o ka ‘āina
Kui ʻia nā lima ʻōiwi
O ke kulāiwi maikaʻi
Ua pili nō a paʻa
I lei wehi o ke ao
Puana ka mahalo
Nou e Kūhiō
Hanohano Laʻiʻōpua
ʻĀina i aloha ʻia
Magnificent is Laʻiʻōpua
In the protection of Hualālai
The mountain standing proudly
A prominent sight of Kona
Beloved is the sight
Of the shimmering sea
Joined with the cliffs
The sea sprayed cliffs of Noio
Overwhelming is the love
Of the beloved flowers
Illuminating the cave
Centered in the land
Native hands are strung
Of the rightful homelands
They are strongly connected
Creating a beautiful lei
Gratitude is shared
For you, Kūhiō
Magnificent is Laʻiʻōpua
Land so deeply loved

A message from the Haku Mele:
Laʻiʻōpua is a cherished Hawaiian homestead located in the ahupuaʻa of Kealakehe, North Kona. Kealakehe is bordered to the North by Honokōhau, and to the South by Keahuolū, the prized lands of Queen Liliʻuokalani. The homestead stands in the protection of Mt. Hualālai which is a prominent feature of the Kona district. The composers offer their mahalo to Uncle Māhealani Pai and Auntie Malani DeAguiar for their generosity in sharing ʻike of Laʻiʻōpua and the ʻāina of Kealakehe, Kona.
